The internal differences within PML-N have become a challenge for the party. The contrasting approaches to governance and political strategy between Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif are not only intensifying division within the party but also creating a perception of disunity among the public. Nawaz Sharif’s aggressive stance, which involves criticism of the establishment, is influencing a section of the party, while Shehbaz Sharif’s reconciliatory policy seeks to improve relations with the government and the establishment.
The emergence of factions supporting each of these leaders within the party is a clear indication of the deepening rift in PML-N’s leadership. On one hand, ministers loyal to Nawaz Sharif advocate for the party’s foundational principles and aggressive politics, while on the other hand, those supporting Shehbaz Sharif view governmental decisions in a more pragmatic manner and support these decisions, even if they do not align with the party’s ideological stance.
This situation has also led to instability and uncertainty within the party’s federal cabinet. Shehbaz Sharif’s desire to expand the cabinet, which has not yet been approved by Nawaz Sharif, suggests there are disagreements at the highest level of the party. This delay has created the impression that Nawaz Sharif and his close circle view cabinet expansion as potentially harmful to the party.
On a public level, this internal struggle within PML-N has caused unease among party workers and supporters. The party members, who expect a unified and strong leadership, are feeling disappointed by the division within the party. Meanwhile, with PTI and other political parties strengthening their own narratives and preparing for upcoming elections, PML-N’s internal divisions could weaken its political standing.
For PML-N, it is crucial to resolve these issues quickly, bring unity to its policies within the party and the government, and present a united front to the public. If PML-N fails to address this challenge in a timely manner, it could have a negative impact on its public support, potentially creating difficulties for the party in future elections.
