Importance of lawful ( halal ) sustenance in Islam
The importance of earning a lawful (halal) livelihood holds a central place in Islam, bringing blessings, peace, and true happiness into a person’s life. Wealth that is earned through legitimate and honest means not only benefits in this worldly life but also assures success in the Hereafter.
Islamic teachings clearly emphasize that the acquisition of wealth should not be the ultimate goal; rather, it must be earned through lawful and permissible means. Allah repeatedly stresses in the Quran that our sources of income should be pure. As stated in Surah Al-Baqarah:
„O people, eat from whatever is on earth that is lawful and good, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.” (Al-Baqarah: 168)
The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also emphasize that even a single morsel earned through lawful means brings countless blessings into a person’s life, while wealth gained through unlawful means becomes a source of distress and destruction.
Lawful income brings peace to one’s heart and allows one to truly enjoy the blessings of life. In contrast, wealth gained through unlawful means not only harms a person in this world but also in the Hereafter. Such wealth may provide temporary joy and comfort, but it weighs heavily on the soul and often manifests in worldly challenges and difficulties.
We should pray to Allah to grant us the ability to earn a lawful and pure income and to keep our hearts steadfast on the path of honesty and integrity. Furthermore, it is our responsibility to promote the importance of lawful earning in our communities so that we may all move toward a life of genuine prosperity and blessing. Ameen
