Pakistan is ruled by an exploitative elite under the guise of democracy

In Pakistan, the system that exists in the name of democracy primarily serves the interests of the elite rather than the people. What we call democracy is essentially the rule of a powerful class that legitimizes itself through elections. However, in reality, this system is far removed from the true needs and desires of the public. This oligarchy—rule by a few powerful individuals and families—does not only dominate political institutions; it also affects social and economic spheres. Media, economy, education, and other sectors are under the control of these influential families and their allies. As a result, policies and laws are designed to protect these groups’ interests, while resources and facilities for the common people continue to diminish.

The term “civilian supremacy” is often understood as a system free from interference by the military or unelected bodies, but in the current situation, this term has merely become a way to create an impression of democratic governance to appease the public. When politicians and rulers belong to the elite class, the aim of civilian supremacy becomes synonymous with preserving the power of this elite.

If we truly desire real democracy and genuine civilian supremacy, it is essential to ensure that common people have representation in the political system. The electoral system should be structured to ensure adequate representation of workers, farmers, teachers, and other working-class groups in Parliament and other public institutions. Additionally, education and awareness should be promoted so that the public understands their rights and can raise their voices.

Until these changes are made, claiming that civilian supremacy exists in Pakistan is nothing more than an illusion. In reality, it is the same elite rule that uses the guise of democracy to safeguard its interests. True public empowerment will only be possible when a genuine democracy is established, one in which the country’s resources are controlled by the people, not by the so-called elite.
