Good Character and the Condemnation of Fault-Finding

A person who ignores his own faults and becomes preoccupied with seeking the faults of others ends up with a blinded heart and a spiritually exhausted body, for he engages in a fruitless and harmful activity. Such a person loses the ability to correct himself and wastes time focusing on the shortcomings of others instead of reflecting on his own. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur’an: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوااجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا „ O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other.” (Surah Al-Hujurat, Ayah 12).

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Blessed is the one who is so busy with his own faults that he does not notice the faults of others.” (Tirmidhi).

Indeed, the weakest of people is the one who constantly engages in fault-finding, for he has become deprived of self-accountability and personal reform. May Allah Almighty protect us from backbiting and finding faults in others. Ameen.
