Islam instructs us to avoid the kind of company that can harm our faith, morals, and domestic peace. In the light of the Qur’an and Hadith, it is essential to distance ourselves from people who are habitual sinners, who lie or backbite, who spread discord among others, who refuse to accept advice, or who show hostility towards Islam. Allah Almighty commands us not to follow those who are sinful, dishonest, and obsessed with worldly life (Al-Kahf: 28, An-Najm: 29). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that a person follows the religion of his friend, so one should carefully consider whom he befriends. A tale-bearer will not enter Paradise (Sahih Muslim), and the example of a backbiter is like one who eats the flesh of his dead brother (Al-Hujurat: 12). Therefore, in order to preserve the spiritual and moral environment of our homes, it is vital to avoid the company of those who make us forget Allah and lead us toward misguidance.
