According to documents submitted in the National Assembly, federal government institutions owe electricity distribution companies an outstanding amount of 47.81 billion rupees, while institutions under provincial governments are defaulting on electricity payments amounting to 151 billion rupees.
The documents reveal that the federal government owes various distribution companies significant amounts, including 6.67 billion rupees to LESCO, 2.82 billion rupees to GEPCO, 1.72 billion rupees to FESCO, 14.13 billion rupees to IESCO, 2.18 billion rupees to MEPCO, 2.22 billion rupees to PESCO, 5.53 billion rupees to HESCO, 9.13 billion rupees to SEPCO, 2.40 billion rupees to QESCO, and 960 million rupees to TESCO.
Similarly, regarding provincial governments, the documents indicate that the Punjab government owes 33.05 billion rupees to five distribution companies, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government owes 26.25 billion rupees to PESCO and TESCO, the Sindh government owes over 54 billion rupees to HESCO and SEPCO, while the Balochistan government owes 38.29 billion rupees to QESCO.
Departments of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government are also major defaulters, with an outstanding amount of 56.77 billion rupees.
The Power Division states that due to the sensitivity of the situation, distribution companies do not disconnect the electricity connections of these departments, but disconnection notices are issued to government departments in case of non-payment.cpd/rr
